system developed more than 80 years ago by Joseph H. Pilates. His purpose for developing an exercise system was for individuals
to develop their physique to high levels of strength, flexibility
and beauty by practice of one’s own mental control. The method
represents a simple way of combining static stretching and aerobic
breathing in a series of controlled, non-impact movements. He
believed that his method which was called “contrology” resulted in
uniform development, alignment of the skeletal system, and control
of the movement, core strength, balanced use of all the muscles, coordination,

Join us in thoughtful reflection as we gather together to listen to the recordings of some pivotal thinkers and speakers of our time in the areas of mental health, stress management and spirituality. The format will be a combination of listening and reflection followed by a choice of journaling or group discussion. On January 16, we will listen to Vocal Toning The Chakras by Jonathan Goldman, a master teacher in Sound Healing, a pioneer in the field of harmonics, published author and recording artist. He teaches how sounds, particularly the human voice, can be used to tune the seven energy centers of the body and consequently the health of our body. We will practice some of his exercises to bring ourselves into healthy vibration. On March 13, we will listen to Understanding Islam by Huston Smith, PhD. Dr. Smith, born in China to missionary parents, is a scholar on comparative religions. He has taught at MIT, Syracuse University and University of California at Berkeley. He presents this timely and accessible introduction on Islam, Mohammed and the Koran, dispelling many misunderstandings. Marie uses Tibetan Singing Bowls, bells, and tingshaws, the Himalayan Sacred Sound Instruments, as well as a variety of gongs, to create this Sound Healing group session. Originating in the ancient Orient, it was believed that monks breathed prayers into the bowls as they were formed. The vibrational sound waves produced by the instruments are used to clear and balance the chakras and energy system, releasing stress and tension. The last portion of the session will be a gong bath; Marie and her assistants will bathe you with a series of gongs.
